When should you remodel, redecorate, or build?

It can be a struggle to decide when you should start a project, whether you're remodeling, redecorating, or building from scratch. Read below for a couple of insider pointers that will help you get started.

SCHEDULES

Contractors can book up quickly, so you need to get on their schedule. They could be busy for the next six months in busy regions, so plan accordingly. Keep in mind, too, that you want to give your architect and interior designer enough time to begin the planning and design phases of your project before the contractor can begin. We can let you know how much time it will take depending on the scope of work.

LEAD TIMES

Most of the work we provide for our clients is custom - you want what no one else has, and we love that! However, keep in mind that items such as handmade custom furniture, rugs, lighting, and tile can take 12-14 weeks just to fabricate. That doesn’t include the planning and design selection process. So, if you’re planning on hosting Thanksgiving at your house, and you want to redecorate, it’s best to pull your interior designer in on the project at least six months prior to your end date.

YOUR LIFESTYLE

Make sure you consider your own schedule when you're scheduling projects. How often will you be out of town and out of contact? Will you need to stay somewhere else while remodeling your home? Are you selling your current house while your new house is being remodeled? Let us know, and we'll make sure it can all get done in time so that you aren't left scrambling.

WEATHER

Inclement weather loves to rear its ugly head when it comes to deadlines. An unusually rainy summer can really slow things down when a builder is trying to get a slab of concrete poured. Hurricanes can delay shipping for weeks as shipping containers get delayed at ports. No matter how much you plan, some things are just out of our control!

EXPECTATIONS

Expect the unexpected. Nearly every project has something that pops up that wasn't anticipated. Keep in mind, we're always working hard to stay on schedule. If you keep us informed about the things mentioned above (except the weather--can't do much about that), it will minimize the impact of these unanticipated events. Lastly, expect that you're going to get to know your design team really well. Remodeling or redecorating several rooms can take up to a year, and in some instances, such as when you're building a new uber custom home, the process could take several years!
