Matchmaking for Halloween?
Did you know that Halloween once brought on the ritual of matchmaking? In 18th Century Europe, some Halloween rituals were focused on helping young women find their future husbands. In Scotland, women would throw hazelnuts into a fire, named after each of her suitors, and the one that burned to ashes instead of exploding might become her husband. In Ireland, cooks might bury a young lady's ring into the mashed potatoes for a man to find. Other women would drink a concoction of nuts and nutmeg, hoping to dream about her future husband on Halloween night!
